The Calm Before the Storm

Two hours after his birth, Joshua was still having some major difficulties breathing. His breaths were VERY labored. Each breath held the sound of grunting still. His resperations were very fast. He had to be put on oxygen....quickly. They started him out on 1 liter through a nasal cannula.

He still was having a difficult time waking up...and they decided a first bath might be in order to get his lungs working. The nurse had seen me at the window forever, and came to ask if I was grandma (it's Mimi around here) and would I like to scrub up and come in to take pictures during this time. She didn't have to ask me twice...and I jumped at the chance. It was my first time touching the little guy, and I treasure every moment. The bath, unfortunately, didn't work for his lungs....but he was clean! And it gave his dad a moment to hold him, so that was cool.

By late evening on the night he was born, Joshua had an IV in his arm (after several painful pokes) and was now on 2 liters of oxygen. He seemed to be getting sicker and sicker by the minute. An x-ray was taken, and they found pneumonia in the middle of his right lung. Antibiotics were started and his nurse, Beckie, stayed at his side every moment.
